Fire is a tricky thing to work with because everyone has a different opinion on what it's supposed to look like.  A type of fire that looks good in one game might look really out of place in another.  I generally try to build fire out of about four emitters- fire, smoke, sparks, distortion.  Movement is, I think, more important than texture.
